What our previous participants say
I have to admit, I left Belgium with a few stereotypes about China - chaos in the streets, a communist mindset, and government control over every part of society. These were somewhat exaggerated, of course, but they were implicit assumptions I carried with me before setting foot in Shanghai.
Shanghai quickly disproved the idea of “chaos in the streets.” It’s a calm, clean, yet vibrant city, resembling a European or American metropolis.
Hangzhou showcased an innovation-driven mindset and a clear embrace of capitalism, being home to some of the world’s largest organizations. Chengdu, as an IT and Artificial Intelligence hub, promoted and encouraged competitiveness.
Beijing offered deep insights into China's culture and rich history.
In short, the three stereotypes—chaos, communism, and control—can be replaced by three new words starting with “C”: capitalism, culture, and competitiveness.
China is overwhelming due to its scale and speed, without giving you a stifling feeling. The buildings in the tier 1 cities are impressive and original. There is space and greenery in the cities, both in terms of color and in the strong environmental awareness.
The Robotaxis from Pony.ai take into account events happening more than 500 meters away from the vehicle. It’s a brilliant example of the foresight of the entire tech sector and the Chinese government. Our interactions with the authorities were excellent. They went all out, not only to spoil us but also to guide us in how to best collaborate in a practical way.
What will stay with me the most is the openness, intelligence, and warmth of the people. To quote Arnold Schwarzenegger: I'll be back! With China Connect.
Thank you Rudy for the great leadership, thank you Jun for the organization of this very inspiring China trip. It was great to meet you all and exchange views and it was a pleasure for the Flanders-China Chamber of Commerce to contribute and share experiences of our members. We will continue to this in Belgium and look forward to welcoming you at our activities! See you in Belgium!
Did I learn more about China? Absolutely!
Did the trip meet my expectations? Much more than that.
Was I surprised by what China has to offer? I surely was: entrepreneurship, innovation, speed of execution, …
Did I meet new friends? Many, starting with all of you but also the Chinese team.
Was the trip well organised? Euh, is the Pope Catholic? Of course, it was perfect.
Thank you Jun for bringing all these experiences to us. Thank you Rudy for leading us with your usual flair, insights and humour. Thank you Xander for the support. Thank you all for your enthusiasm, inputs and the many Gan Bei’s.
When I decided to join the trip, I was not sure if I would learn enough from it. Now, I am struggling to summarise all the findings and memories. What a wonderful country it is.
Thank you for organizing such an incredible and insightful journey through China. I deeply appreciate the meticulous care and effort you put into every aspect of this experience. As you mentioned, from the vibrant streets of Shanghai to the peaceful beauty of Westlake in Hangzhou, where we were captivated by the unforgettable show, every moment has been an opportunity to see the authentic side of China and its many facets.
The business discussions in Hangzhou and Chengdu were incredibly meaningful, offering us unique insights into cutting-edge innovations, such as those from Alibaba and Pony AI and all the others. The cultural exchange we experienced - from the grand state banquets organised by UNIDO IPTO, the informal street food markets - was equally enriching and will remain with us for years to come. The hospitality and ceremonial customs we encountered throughout the trip were indeed different from European norms, but they offered us a deeper understanding of China’s values of respect and tradition.
We leave China not only with exciting business prospects but also with lasting memories and meaningful connections that transcend borders. The warm friendships and cross-cultural dialogues we've shared have deepened our appreciation of both Eastern and Western values.
Thank you once again for this remarkable experience. We look forward to continuing our collaboration and dialogue in the future.
